Vinny's Thoughts on His G-Shock

The Seiko SKX009 has been my one and only watch for almost two years, up until recently when my grandfather gave me all his old watches and surprisingly my old G Shock which I hadn’t seen since middle school. All of the watches he gave me were great but I always find myself reaching for my G Shock because it is just so easy, I don’t even have to think about setting the time because it always has the right time, it’s all black so it goes with every outfit, and not to mention that it is tough as hell. After wearing it for several months in between my usual rotation, I have come to the conclusion that the G Shock DW 5600E can be the only watch you wear or need.
Now obviously the 5600E isn’t dressy in any sense of the word, so maybe one could have the casio and a dress watch to balance things out, but really that would be all you need. However I am well aware of dive and tool watches that a lot of collectors love to have, trust me I would know from wearing my SKX every day, but now that I have worn the G Shock for two months, the SKX rarely gets my wrist time in casual settings, and when I need to dress it up, I’ll just slap on a nice dress watch and I am good to go.
For those of you who would still prefer to wear a diver, I urge you to go to any retail store and pick up the cheapest G Shock they have, which would most likely be the 5600E. It should run you around 40 to 50 bucks, and wear that puppy for a good two weeks straight, I guarantee you won’t want to wear anything else for a while. It is just so practical and it really shows you everything a tough quartz can do compared to a mechanical for a fraction of the price. And as long as you have a classy dress watch, you will not need anything else.
Many collectors tend to frown upon quartz watches, especially G Shocks, but they almost always overlook their ruggedness and functionality over a mechanical diver or tool watch. While yes most mechanical divers can take a beating, they cant withstand nearly as much the good old casio can. Being open minded is something I always mention in my articles because having tunnel vision can really hinder your ability to find new and interesting pieces. So with that, I will end this by reminding everyone to not drink the Kool Aid.
