Vinny's Thoughts On Collecting

Andrew:

Last week me and Vinny did a video all about cheap watches, collecting, and finding your niche. Here Vinny goes deeper into his opinion about how he collects and why he find it the best way to go or at least something to chew over. Take a look at our video and have a listen to what we experienced, our opinions on collecting and finding your niche!

Vinny:

My Thoughts on Collecting

Many beginner watch collectors want lots of watches but don’t have a lot of money to spend, so they tend to buy many cheap beginner watches. This may seem like a good idea at the time because you can have a variety of watches for not a lot of money, however I disagree. I feel that collectors who are just starting off should buy one or two cheap watches just to get them into the hobby, but then save and save and save until they can buy their grail watch in cash. If you do this then you will have a much greater appreciation for your new higher-dollar watch, and will likely wear it more and for a longer period of time, possibly even hand it down to the next generation.

Don’t get me wrong, you should obviously buy what you love, and if that’s only Seiko 5 or other less-expensive watches, go right ahead. That said, I feel like you should at least try to save your money and get that expensive watch you have always wanted. Even striving for a one or two watch collection could be ideal for some people because then it won’t be as difficult to rotate watches whereas if you had many watches, some of them may not get worn and appreciated.

If you are the kind of person who likes having a concise collection with two to three watches, then saving up your money to get those three watches that you really want may be the best choice for you. Start by saving for that everyday watch, something you can wear with anything (such as a Submariner or a Speedmaster). After the everyday watch, think about adding a more formal watch to wear for dressy events and a watch in a totally different style just to switch things up.

Take these opinions in and think about them; over time you may start to realize that you aren’t quite satisfied with a large collection of watches that you end up settling on. When it comes to collecting, I feel as though taking your time to acquire the pieces you really want is worth it for just about any collector at any phase in their collecting journey.
