Well, it’s been a while since Swatch announced leaving Baselworld, while you’ve heard many things, and sadly most of it’s true. This may be a shock to you or maybe you’ve had a hunch for a while… but it finally came true. July 29th the news finally came in when Nick Hayek Jr. the CEO of Swatch group dropped that shook the ground of the future of Basel. Since the shock, it seems like it's been a professional bickering fight between Swatch Group and Baselworld and its parent company. Swatch Group was the largest exhibitor at the event with a total of 18 brands.
But while Swatch may be the largest group to be apart of Basel, it is definitely not the first one to leave. The show has lost 850 exhibitors over the last few years, most, however, have been smaller brands. But this trend can show the future downfall of the exhibit and with Swatch Group leaving other big players may abandon ship in months to come.
It seems like Swatch doesn't find the same value in Basel as they once did. Claiming to want to focus more on Social media which seems to be causing more action than Basel and the millions they spent on being there. But in my personal opinion as long as LVMH, Rolex, and Patek stay so will the event. The loss of Swatch hurts but maybe it will open the doors to another amazing event for us watch nerds!
