Is One Enough? By Vintage Watchfam

Today I was looking down to check the time on my Seiko SNK (just admiring it). When I look at this piece, the constant thought that comes up is ‘Why do I have so many watches?’ I don't know how I should be reacting to the idea of having one watch.

Of course, watch collecting is a hobby and like with any hobby, the same question can be applied to why anybody collecting anything. But its still a reasonable thought from time to time when going through your collection. We don't collect out of practicality, but rather out of desire, emotion, and fun. To non-watch geeks, spending thousands on a timepiece is absurd and extremely impractical.
Wanna know something funny? My brother is a sneakerhead, meaning he collects sneakers. Same obsession, a different item. I always make fun of him for spending 300$ on his yeezys, but I don't even think twice about spending one grand on a vintage Tudor. To me, I see tremendous value in this little stainless steel, mechanical time-keeping thing. My brother thinks I'm insane of justifying 40k on a Lange, but that's a whole other debate. He doesn't see the value in watches and I don't see the value in sneakers.
Now back to the one watch thing. Practicality is not necessarily on top of our checklist when buying watches. To some, 12 watches are nothing and to others, 5 watches are overwhelming. Owning one watch is truly a challenge for a lot of watch geeks. I know I cant do that as I have already established a few pieces that can never part my collection or perhaps my life.
I do admire the idea of having one watch with you every day. It would definitely make a great story when passing it down to your kids or grandchildren. “Your father/ grandfather wore this watch for 30 years! Now it's your turn”. I would like to know if any watch geeks would ever consider “settling down” and owning the one watch thing.
Would the one watch be vintage? Modern? Your first piece? The most practical? The most beautiful? The gift? Your grandfathers?
The choices go on and on...
