As many watch collectors or just casual fans of watches know, when you have
a watch for long enough, it may start to become stale to wear. This is where
having multiple different strap options comes into play.
For example: if you have a Seiko SKX (pick your variant) with a metal bracelet
and you have been wearing it for a month or so, swapping it for a nice suede
strap can instantly make it way more fun (especially if you have the 009
variant because the light tan suede will make the red and blue bezel really
pop).
Or on the other hand, with an SKX007, a black leather NATO can make it feel
more dressed up, especially so if the NATO is fine black calfskin. These
examples are just the beginning; dipping your toes into the water (if you will)
of strap selection.
Now let’s say one has a Seiko SARB white dial on a nice crocodile black
leather strap: very formal indeed! Put that same watch on a nice tri-color
NATO and it turns into a casual summer watch.
Even if you only have one watch like myself, you can turn it into many different
watches just by having ten to twenty straps for it, and in doing so you can
effectively triple or quadruple your collection. I know personally that having a
SKX009 for over a year, it can start to become “plain jane” to wear, but if you
get creative, you can really turn your same old watch into a brand new piece
for you to love for many more years to come. I even suggest looking on
Instagram to see what others are doing with the same watch you have! So the
next time you reach for your everyday watch with hesitation, just remember
that you can make it new again by changing the strap, and thus revitalize your
love for it for many years to come.
